Your First Visit Will Be Longer Than Most
Because we want to get a good baseline idea of your current oral health, your first visit will be a bit longer as we will go through a comprehensive dental exam that is very thorough and includes X-rays and the following (most of which will also be addressed during shorter follow-up visits.)
Diagnostic X-Rays: This step is mandatory to detect signs of decay, oral tumors, cysts and other dental conditions. There is no need to worry about radiation as we use very low-radiation X-rays.
Screening For Oral Cancer: We examine the face, neck, lips, throat, and tissue in these areas for signs of oral cancer. The sooner cancer is detected the better the chance of recovery.
Gum Health: Checking the gums and bone for signs of periodontal disease.
Tooth Decay Exam: All tooth surfaces are thoroughly inspected with special tools to check for signs of decay.
Restoration Exam: If applicable, we check your fillings, crowns and any other devices such as dental implants and bridges.
Plaque Removal: Plaque is a build-up of sticky opaque film that accumulates on the teeth. Made up of live bacteria, food particles and saliva; it can cause tooth decay, disease or more severe conditions if not removed.
Tartar Removal: Tartar is what develops when plaque is left to accumulate and harden. The plaque literally attaches to the tooth surface and becomes very difficult to remove. Since it forms both beneath and above the gum line, it can only be removed using special tools. A more advanced procedure called a debridement is another procedure that may be used to aid in removal.
Polish: Once all preventative and maintenance cleaning are done, we polish your teeth to remove stains and residual plaque not removed with prior procedures.
